About the Design
Meli Studio was brought onto the project to design the refurbishment of one wing of the Marion facility. Other areas will be updated over time to be in line with our design.
Meli studio selected all the FF&E items including the furnishing of refurbished wing. We provided the client with 3 layout options with the initial design for the TV unit shown below. Option one was designed to separate the spaces while still allowing it to be open. Option 2 and 3 layout was included a more open plan. The client selected option 3 as it was going to be a better option for the next stage of refurbishment.
The wing houses a mixed level of care, mostly residence in this wing require a high level of care. This needed to be taken into consideration when designing. As the living space comes directly off the bedrooms the facility required a privacy screen to give some privacy for residents while still allowing the staff to be able to see all residence. The screen was built into a full height wall, allowing the builders to reinforce the screens for extra strength. The TV unit was also built into a U shape wall to ensure there are no shape edges. A bulkhead was added to the racked ceiling to avoid the top of the unit from being needed to be cleaned.
In the bedrooms the TV unit has curved edges and sits height enough that it is not a hazard for people in wheel chairs. A perspex screen was added into the design, the middle curved shelf was squared off and a divider was added to allow for the TV's to be enclosed in perspex. This was done due to the high level of care required in this wing. All curtains were also fitted with non-ligature cords in accordance to Australian Standards. The bedheads are designed with split battens so they can be attached directly to the wall. The bedhead also was designed to have a nurse call, light switches and power points with rocker plates.
All furniture was selected from a aged care range with custom selected fabrics. All fabrics selected were Crypon or similar to allow for easy cleaning. The colour pallet for this wing consist of cream, beige and green tones with a mid grey vinyl floorboard with a R9 rating. The client requested a vinyl flooring for the bathrooms. We were able to push for tiles on the wall, this allowed us to add some interest and colour to the bathrooms.
